Exactly! They keep telling him to help the "lord' without even meeting him. Orphen's conditions are logical and carry no ill will. I like it when the characters act normal, not unhinged.

Violetta Bertini • 1 year ago

Some highlights:
* Orphen upgraded from being a fantasy biker to being a fantasy black ops.
* Ygritte can't do jack - I did not expect here to be this useless - I guess the author really does not like blond people;
* Winona getting owned easily now was expected: after your first introduction fight, your power level always drops a lot if you are not a main character;
* the 3 way backstabbing coupled with all the illusions is making for a rather interesting setup;
* Lottecia's sword confirmed to be something pivotal;
* no annoying characters if not for 10s of the dwarfs, yay!

Porthya • 10 months ago

I doubt the author doesn't like blond people, the MC's closest and dearest friends are both blond(e) and they're set up for their own progress(if anything, Claiomh has a staggering advantage in holding huge influence over a deep dragon, something pretty much unheard of, to the point that most humans would either steer clear off dragons or try to eliminate them), it's just that he built them as more idealistic from a moral standpoint, and that's often a fatal flaw in a dog eat dog world like theirs. Idealism in and of itself is not bad, but when paired with lack of life experience it will realistically be damning to a character or real person. It needs to be practiced in moderation.
I'm rather sure Claiomh and Majic will eventually learn to do that, but they're still young and I think they've so far travelled with Orphen for maybe less than a year. And human habits don't easily change over the course of one year. They haven't experienced many highly traumatic events to alter their viewpoints at higher speed either.
The Winona point is actually realistic, she is taller and bulkier than Orphen, but still has a woman's muscle density and bigger people are rarely more agile than daintier ones, they're technically bigger targets for any sort of attack.

Violetta Bertini • 10 months ago

I was half joking about the hatred for blonds, but anyway it has been stated before that it is more like Claiomh is the pet of Leki.

I would object on the realism part, though: people from the middle ages (and that kind of fantasy setting is pretty close to that, even if you count the occasional steamboat here and there) were definitely less touchy and more pragmatic, seeing death all the time and accepting it (particularly if coming from divine being); someone as annoyingly "pure" as Claiomh would just be very likely to end up cut down by Darwinian selection in a pre-industrial society.

I think they travelled for longer and regardless of the time, the intensity also matters: with plenty of life and death situations, I would have expected some more "awakening" from both of them; and human habits can easily change overnight with a trauma.

Winona was trained (and presented) as a super-elite fighter, but she went down in the same way her random fellow soldiers/punching bags did: anti-climatic to say the least.

The thing is, the newer reveals for the universe point to their world being much more industrialised than we'd originally think. The steamboats are not the only evidence of modernity with this setting, but also Orphen's "biker" standard outfit(if I'm not mistaken, you were the one joking about it and his switch to Black Ops gear, much like Leticia), Claiomh's basic urban outfit consisting of a dress shirt and pair of jeans, Winona's basic soldier gear plus the handguns she's using, even Orphen was given some pretty modern looking weaponry, in spite of it being apparently modified for magic, and plenty other details. The fashion is a hodge podge of eras, the female officer showing up at the start of the series trying to arrest Volkan and Dortin was dressed in a typical skirt style uni for current day policewomen.
And the ideologies are on par. There's enough modern feminism to Claiomh's family, and acknowledgement of her personal strengths, to let her travel "unchaperoned" for all her sheltered upbringing, together with 2 unrelated to her young men(well, Majic's younger and confortably brotherzoned, but her family ended up acquainted with Orphen when he helped the dwarves attempt that marriage scam...and nothing came of it for now, save for destruction of their estate courtesy of Bloody August and a wandering younger daughter...yet that seems inconsequential, Claiomh still gets to be independent starting with age 17), so, no, I don't think she'd be cut down by Darwinian selection, as this isn't as premodern as one would think on first sight.
If anything, her purity paired with the strongheadedness Orphen brought up during her "sleeping beauty" stint ended up, together with her yet undeveloped talent for magic, leading Leki practically astray from his race and getting him to imprint on her...by extension on Orphen too, since he's the magical prodigy. But that doesn't make Claiomh into Leki's pet, rather it makes her into an yet untrained and instinctive beastmaster of sorts. Yes, she's more optimistic than it's generally safe, but that works in tandem with her knack for magic and the pull she has for cynicists like Orphen or savage creatures lik deep dragons, which leads to a balancing out, in turn.
Also, the only genuine trauma they've experienced is maybe days/weeks old, unless it's such an intense affair it'd keep them shocked or catatonic, it's safe to say both are strong enough to resist too immediate changes. If there's to be some major change in Claiomh, it should start occuring now, since she's still processing how she feels about her failure with the "despair" dude, and about unlocking that weird merging ability with Leki

You make interesting arguments, so allow me to try and address most, if not all, of them by bullet points:
* what I meant referring to pre-industrial setting was before society moved on from being mostly agricultural and more modern medicine, sanitation and nutrition became available in order to reduce infant mortality, which incidentally seems to be related with a constant decline in average IQ (ie: less filtering for genetic flaws), and that in turn made death much more common, even for upper class people like Claiomh or middle class like Majic - most people would have known or even witnessed siblings, younger relatives and friends die in spades;
* limited use of gunpowder was present in comparable terms well before the industrial revolution and the clothing does not really says much: modern pants were introduced in the West by the more frequently riding barbarians that came into contact with the Romans, who otherwise, like the Greeks and most other previous civilisations, would have worn basically longer skirts; shirts are also from the middle ages, IIRC;
* I wouldn't say we saw much modern feminism (luckily! And by modern I mean third and fourth wave); we do not know if women could vote anything (is actually anyone voting there?), but there is some second wave hint, in women holding jobs on par with men;
* Claiomh seems to fit more the trope of the spoiled Oujo that just does whatever she wants because her family is rich and powerful - plus some general suspension of disbelief, like the Pokemon MC roaming the world alone despite being 10 or so;
* I don't think she showed much magic prowess - more like Leki using her as a vessel - and I would not consider Deep Dragons as "savage";
* you don't have to go catatonic to face immediate changes, but I concur she might be over her own interiorisation of the traditional 5 phases of mourning.

1.Your first point somewhat contradicts the fourth one, someone who'd have witnessed so much death, in a world where magic is accessible enough to help prevent more common causes( with the obvious exception of maiming to the point of bleeding to death, as in the current arc, or otherwise murdering people), would already be either heavily desensitised to death as a whole, which we haven't seen happening with either Claiomh or Majic, or too severely traumatised, or we know the only significant death to ever occur in Claiomh's past is her father(leading to her initially not wanting to let the Sword of Baltanders, her only relic of him, go); in other words they'd have little to no mean or reason of being spoiled and would be more pragmatic(like most stabbers, or too afraid to take on the world the way this girl does. Same with Majic. It's true she is a tomboy and very obstinate in her pursuit of her goals, but that comes across as more determination than bratty entitlement. I'm not entirely sure whether Majic's mother passed away(if it was mentioned, I forgot), or abandoned his father and him. I do believe it was the former, but again, it didn't manage to break his more idyllic and naive views of the world, as Totokanta is relatively a very safe city to live in for people of Claiomh's and Majic's statuses, save for the Back Alley area from which Orphen was operating during his stay there. Their worldviews have been gradually reshaping, but it's seemingly a slower process that one would think.
Also, given the way Claiomh saved Leki's body and simply herself during the Ryan confrontation, I'd say her IQ isn't low at all, it simply has been underused or misapplied up till now, what with her having been raised with the purpose to be an "ojou", the type of formal education included( private boarding school for the last few years before the start of the story). She's been begging to differ from her family's pov ever since she left to journey with Orphen and Majic. As far as I've seen, her mother and sister took this change much better than Jude Heartfillia reacted to his daughter disowning him and joining an oddly reputed magic guild in Fairy Tail.
2. I wasn't discussing gunpowder(I don't even recall if I've seen it used here), I was discussing handguns like Glocks and their close precursors still specific to the same 20th century. I was also thinking of Orphen's, Claiomh's, Winona's fashion choices, as well as all those military, hunting and paramilitary uniforms as pertaining mostly to the latter half of the 20th century as well. There's also the guy in the bowler hat, again, another nod to the 20th century, for the most part. And blue jeans started becoming something young people, regardless of walk in life, would wear only around the 1950s-1960s, courtesy of James Dean and Marlon Brando movies turning them into a fad. My point remains that this setting could allude to any given era from the past millennium and still feel more modern than medieval. Because it comes complete with past and current century attitudes as well. We don't know if there's any voting going on anywhere in this world, but we do know high career positions are available to anyone, regardless of gender, as long as they have the talent and the determination to pursue it. Case in point, Azalie and Leticia are only seen as trouble since and when they choose to cause it. Their gender is hardly even mentioned in conjunction with their talent and what they choose to do with it.
3. I address those waves as contemporary feminism, by modern I meant the first two, as three and four happened during my lifetime and it seems yours too, and I take issues with some of their goals' nuances as well. However, I find it odd that you'd consider Claiomh a spoiled ojou and yet counter the hints of these recent two waves in the story, as most of the current day feminists present themselves as spoiled, privileged people who fail to see the differences between needs, rights, responsibilities and privileges and instead of arguing their points(for better or worse), they simply try to force them(or rather random things, dependent on whim) upon others.
4. I've had to recently binge the last part of S3, haven't had the chance to catch up to the latest episode of 4, so I specifically remember Claiomh using Leki as more of a vessel, during a switcheroo, time in which his soul remained inactive(keeping Claiomh's body comatose), but she confronted Ryan in Leki's massive, "adult" form, and even had to work around his magic to salvage his body and save herself by recreating a baby version of him from some parts of his developed form. Idk if the soul switch repeated itself by the latest episode, but for now it's Claiomh who's been holding the reins and determining the huge difference between Leki and the other Fenrirs. So far the Fenrirs don't abide to norms and rules humans do, so from human perspective, they are savage. Very self-isolating as a community and apparently not possessing individuality( presumably Leki is an isolated case, I'll have to see if that holds true by the end of this sanctuary conflict).
5. I concede on the catatonic point, it was simply the most appropriate reaction I would've seen in Claiomh past the Ryan incident, yet she defied my expectations.

I miss how saying that death was more common contradicts saying that Claiomh was a sheltered, detached elite.

Also, magic is definitely not diffused or accessible enough: only a tiny percent of the population can use it and only an even smaller fraction of them can do healing magic.

The IQ decline note as an aside, not related to Claiomh and we are actually living ourselves in a phase of reverse Flynn effect.

I fail to see any "modern" weaponry, intending with that anything from the past 100-150 years.

Jeans were available long before Hollywood push for them and female could have positions of powers in several pre-industrial societies (Cleopatra is the first coming to mind, for example).

Feminism in the current declension is garbage, Claiomh is garbabe, so for me it was like doing 2 + 2 :D

I would still counter that such an ideology is nowadays too fixated on fighting strawmen and windmills, having run out of actual major issues; more in general, the excessive feminisation of society and the consequent lack of capacity on taking harder choices (in welfare, justice, etc.) is a plague way worse than most things worrying the media today (like the alleged "climate catastrophe" in greta's terms...).

I still maintain that it was Reki allowing Claiomh to live, he was never at a serious risk.
